Artstop, Lexington’s second artistically designed bus shelter, was dedicated this Sunday, August 2nd at 3:00 pm. The shelter is located in downtown Lexington’s East End at the corner of Third Street and Elm Tree Lane across from the Lyric Theater.

The new transit shelter incorporates a large metal sculpture entitled “Lyrical Movement” and five 2-D art mural panels, celebrating the connection between art and transit, function and inspiration. The unique outdoor gallery will display artwork that celebrates the rich history and culture of the East End while embracing change in the neighborhood and exploring its future.

The project is a partnership between Art in Motion, Inc., LexTran, Urban County councilperson Andrea James and the LFUCG planning division. It was funded by a combination of privately raised funds, Knight Foundation grant, LFUCG Neighborhood Development Bond Fund grant and LexTran funds. The firm that designed the shelter, EOP Architects, and all contractors on the project provided their services at or below cost.

Like Art in Motion’s first shelter, Bottlestop, the new shelter uses solar technology to power all lighting.

Speakers at the dedication will include East End resident and artist Joan Brannon, sculptor and UK faculty member Garry Bibbs, LexTran general manager Rocky Burke and First District representative Andrea James. Local jazz ensemble ‘Water’ will perform before and after the dedication ceremony.
