Project Description
Art in Motion (www.art-in-motion.us), a nonprofit corporation based in Lexington, Kentucky, is
pleased to announce its second design contest for an artistically designed bus shelter in partnership with the historic Aylesford Place Neighborhood Association, the University of Kentucky and the Lexington Transit Authority (LexTran) in Lexington, Kentucky.
Project Scope
Art in Motion, in association with Aylesford Place Neighborhood Association, the University of Kentucky and LexTran, is offering a $2000 design prize/commission for design of a unique transit shelter to serve LexTran riders and University of Kentucky students. The shelter will serve both as bus stop with seating and shelter for riders and as public art that incorporates living plants.
The shelter should provide visual stimulation that draws the eye away from the surrounding electric utility lines and poles.
Professional architects, engineers, landscape designers, sculptors and artists are eligible. Students under the supervision of relevant professionals are also eligible.
A cash prize of $2,000 will be awarded for the winning design. The prize will be awarded to the selected winner upon delivery of detailed construction drawings of the winning design and completion of shelter fabrication. The selected winner shall be responsible for reasonable communication with chosen fabricator needed to ensure correct interpretation of design drawings and successful fabrication of design.

The total budget for materials and construction of structure and planting is $17,500

The site is at the interface between the land grant University of Kentucky campus and the surrounding community of approximately 260,000 people. The shelter will serve both LexTran and the University of Kentucky’s transit system.
The structure must be constructed within a 28 x 17 buildable area or footprint.
Project Timeline

Proposed date for announcing winning design : April 14, 2010
Fabrication and installation of shelter: projected completion August 30, 2010
Application Guidelines
To enter design contest, entrant should submit following information:
A one-page typed letter of interest containing brief narrative about design and name of individual or firm, mailing address, phone number and email address.
Current resume of individual or firm members
Conceptual drawings of design, including plans, elevations, sections, axon, and typical details.
Detailed cost opinion demonstrating proposed design can be completed within stated budget.
All material must be on 8 ½” x11” paper with no staples.
Design Criteria
The design should mitigate the visual impact of nearby power transmission towers and provide a vegetative oasis between a high traffic corner (including motorized and bicycle lanes) and a surface parking lot. The shelter must incorporate vegetation as a major element in the design of the structure.
The bus shelter itself should be designed as one element in a unified environment, inviting riders and pedestrians and to enter and sit.
The entire environment, including structure and plantings, must be low maintenance in material, details and finish.
The jury will judge the entries on the basis of originality and artistic appeal in the design of the whole form and plantings.
The garden shelter should also:
Provide adequate shelter from seasonal weather, including precipitation, wind and sun.
Provide seating, inside and outside, in sun and in shade
Afford multiple entries and visibility for urban safety including lighting for night time use
Accommodate handicap chairs and a person with a bicycle
Include community amenities, i.e., space for posting community notices, recycling and garbage bins.
The shelter must satisfy any applicable local, state and federal regulations and all requirements imposed in the Encroachment Permit issued by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet . Post-Application Process
A selection committee made of representatives of LexTran, Aylesford Place Neighborhood Association, and the University of Kentucky, among others will choose the winning design. Winning and non-winning entrants will be notified by email.
